Swimming Lessons

K1 students practise their kicking
During May all the students from Woolston School attended swimming lessons at Pioneer Pools in Spreydon for two weeks.

All classes travelled by bus every day for a half hour lesson each. The students all made great progress with their swimming and confidence skills.

The students also had the opportunity to learn some water survival skills and experience what it would be like to wear a lifejacket and how that would help to save them if they ever fell off a boat.

A Kunekune Pig Called Trooper

Trooper joined us at Woolston School in April.
He was just 12 weeks old, but already a good size.

He was introduced to all the pupils at Friday assembly.

We had a competition to give him a name. There were lots of entries and suggestions.

The three most popular names were Wilbur, Boss Hogg & Trooper.

The final voting decided on Trooper as the name for our school pig.

Trooper is a kunekune pig. The name kunekune is a Maori word that means 'fat and round' and that is just what Trooper is!

He has tassles, or pire pire, that hang from his cheeks. These show he is a real kunekune.

Trooper is a gentle pig and he likes to be around people.

One of his favourite people at school is our caretaker Ben. Ben lets Trooper out every day for walks and has even taught him how to sit on command.

Trooper LOVES his food and he eats all our fruit and lunch scraps, as long as they have not been near any meat.
